Why exploring the world should be your New Year resolution for 2015

Travel - most of us want to do more of it, but many of us never seem to get around to booking that trek to the Himalayas or beach holiday in Greece. The start of a new year is a great time to make resolutions, so why not make yours to travel more in 2015? Making a travel resolution is one thing - keeping it is another. Start now by booking a short break or organising a holiday for later in the year to give yourself time to save - there's no time like the present!

Broaden your horizons

Travelling to another country teaches you about the way of life in another place - you'll meet local people, taste their food, experience their customs and take in the beauty of your surroundings. For the best way to experience another country, independent travel such as backpacking or a holiday you've organised yourself (such as a homestay) is perfect. Some companies offering guided tours provide homestays as part of the tour - this is a great opportunity to live amongst the locals and really immerse yourself in their way of life. Annual multi-trip insurance will ensure you're covered no matter how remote a destination you travel to, or how many adventures you go on this year.

Closer to home

Even if you only travel to Europe, travelling can still broaden your horizons. You could learn a new language, discover how to cook local specialities or find out more about local customs. If you're holidaying in the UK, it's a great excuse to escape home - if you live in a big, busy city, take a break to the seaside or a quiet, rural location and rent a cottage. Try something different; book an activity holiday or take the kids on a traditional British seaside holiday to experience the amusements and chips on the beach.

Don't break your resolutions&

The best way to keep your travel resolutions is to act on them, today. Whether you can afford a couple of days away in Cornwall right now, or would prefer to book a fortnight in Thailand in December, you can organise a holiday and start saving, which gives you something to look forward to. Travelling can become addictive once you start, and you'll feel great that you've set yourself a goal and stuck to it.
