Where to travel this Christmas?

People fall into two distinct categories: those that love a white Christmas, and those that are longing for a bit of fun in the sun come Christmas day. Whether you're looking for a snow-covered destination this winter or a sunny beach with a barbie, our handy guide to this year's top Christmas destinations has you covered.

Belgium

A trip to Belgium is fantastic at any time of year, but Bruges really comes alive at Christmas, with its authentic European Christmas markets. Expect hand-carved toys, delicious local delicacies and mulled wine, and of course if you're hungry after your shopping, you could always enjoy a tasty, steaming bowl of 'Moules' (mussels) at a local bar. Christmas in Belgium is truly magical, but make sure you take plenty of warm clothes as it does get pretty cold!

The Canaries

Temperatures average around 24 degrees centigrade at Christmas, and Tenerife is a great choice, provided you get away from the crowds. Or head for Lanzarote where you can enjoy self-catering accommodation or a stunning villa with private pool, perfect for a relaxing break.

Egypt

Low prices and great weather combine to make Egypt one of the best destinations this Christmas. It's not too hot, and imagine spending Christmas on the beaches of Sharm el Sheikh or exploring the Pyramids and the Valley of the Kings?

Thailand

Thailand might be a Buddhist country, but they still celebrate Christmas there, making it a great destination at this time of year. The weather in December is hot and dry, although it's rainy season for many coastal resorts. Head for Phuket and treat yourself to a luxurious stay at a spa resort, then explore the area's Buddhist temples and street markets for an authentic Thai Christmas.

Africa

Kenya is the perfect option for a family break in Africa - why not enjoy Christmas on safari in the Masai Mara or horse-riding in the Okavango Delta. The weather in Kenya is hot at this time of year, making it a magical choice for Christmas in the sun.

Whether you choose a hot or cold destination, there are plenty of places in Europe and further afield to tempt you (and the family) away for a Christmas abroad this year, so why not try something different? You'll return home refreshed and ready to face the New Year feeling motivated, whether you spend Christmas day on a beach in Goa or shopping the Christmas markets in Germany
