Have you been browsing through holiday brochures and websites, wondering where to go on your travels this year? In case you need a little inspiration, here are some of our top picks for travel in 2016.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux, which is staking its claim as the wine capital of the world, is located at the centre of the largest fine wine producing region in the country. La Cite du Vin, a museum dedicated to the 'evolution of wine’, opens its doors to the public in June and this 10-storey glass building will provide visitors with an immersive tour.

Expect futuristic holograms informing you about wine and even an amazing rooftop restaurant perched at the top of the 55-metre high viewing tower.

Dublin

2016 is the centenary of the Easter Rising of 1916, an event that paved the way for Irish independence. There are plenty of commemorative events running throughout the year and Dublin is most definitely the place to be.

Don't miss the special exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland, which opens on 3rd March, or why not join a 1916 Rebellion Walking Tour visiting some of the city's most popular sights, including Kilmainham Gaol, Trinity College and Dublin Castle?

Finish off with a tour and tasting at the Teeling Whiskey Distillery for the perfect short break.

Rio de Janeiro

The 2016 Olympics are being hosted in Rio this year, which means it is set to be a top destination; however, bear in mind that this means prices for holidays here will rise.

The city's beautiful natural landscape and the Olympic events are two major reasons to visit Rio.Another is the Museum of Tomorrow. Opened in December 2015, the building was designed by Santiago Calatrava and is fast becoming a must-see sight in the city, with exhibitions dedicated to climate change.

Iran

After the nuclear programme agreement in July − and better relations with the west as a result − Iran has opened its doors to visitors, with thousands of tourists expected to flock here this year.

More tour operators than ever before are running holidays to this beautiful ancient land packed with history.

First on your must-see list is Persepolis, once the seat of Darius the Great. Visit the Soltaniyeh, a mausoleum dating back to the 14th century, and see the cities of Tehran, Isfahan and Shiraz. Don't miss a wander around the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art.

Wherever you are headed this year, don't forget to organise your cheap annual travel insurance before you set off. This means you will be protected abroad, no matter how many holidays you decide to take.
