City breaks or a relaxing week on the beach - the options available when choosing a summer holiday are endless. But what type of holiday will you be taking this summer? It all depends on what you're looking for from your break.

Independent traveller

If you're an independent traveller (whether male or female!) then a city break is a great option. Visiting somewhere in Europe, such as Prague, Rome or Paris ensures that you will have plenty to see and do during your holiday. Whether you decide to go for a few days or a couple of weeks, most large cities have museums, galleries, attractions and a whole host of events happening every day - there's something for everyone!

A city break isn't always the most relaxing holiday and you need to be careful with your choice of destination - for instance, Italy is sunnier in the summer than parts of Eastern Europe, so if a tan is top of your list, it's best to head somewhere hotter! Organise your city break in advance - there are many websites where you can order travel tickets and queue jump passes for museums and galleries, saving you a lot of time once you arrive in the city! It's particularly important to make sure that you have travel insurance in place if you're travelling alone. Policies are available from as little as a few pounds and it really is worthwhile ensuring you have adequate coverage in place!

Sun, Sand and Sangria

If you're looking for a relaxing holiday on the beach - you have a couple of choices. Stay close to home and head for a sandy beach in Spain or the South of France, or take off for a more exotic location such as the Maldives, Thailand or Goa. In essence, a beach holiday should be about little more than soaking up the sun and enjoying good food and wine - but if you're keen to experience a new culture and lifestyle whilst you're on holiday, then heading to exotic climes could be for you! In Thailand, you can take part in activities such as an elephant ride, snorkelling in crystal clear waters and enjoying local street food such as Pad Thai (flat noodles with egg, shrimp, peanuts and chilli). If you would rather just top up your tan whilst reading your favourite book, a budget break in Spain could be the perfect choice - budget hotels offer great value for money and are usually located close to the beach so that you can stroll down each morning and spend your day relaxing.
