There are cities where food is an afterthought, and then there are cities where people travel simply to try the local cuisine. If you are a foodie, you are probably always on the hunt for new destinations that offer out-of-this-world cuisine. Here we have gathered together some of the world's best cities for food.

Tokyo, Japan

Did you know that Japan holds more Michelin stars than any other country? Tokyo is where most Michelin-starred establishments can be found, and it is not just world-class sushi that you need to look out for here. Okonomiyaki pancakes, tonkatsu pork and anything and everything with tofu are all on the menu − head for a local izakaya (pub) to try Japanese-style tapas for a real treat.

Jaipur, India

Rajput cooking is represented in Jaipur and, as hunting was a big part of this type of cuisine, chargrilled and barbecue meats feature heavily. Laal maas − spicy Rajasthani goat curry − uses 45 chillies per kilogram of meat! Amazingly spicy, this curry is usually served with rice or flatbread and a range of accompaniments including raita (cooling yoghurt dip) to temper the heat.

New York City, New York

NYC is home to eight million people from around the globe and you will find a huge array of culinary influences here. Fine dining and new trends jostle for your attention alongside the classics, and it is these classics that New York seems to do so well. Head to Peter Luger in Brooklyn, established in 1887, and try the Porterhouse steak − this restaurant is said by many to be the best steakhouse in the world. Alternatively, enjoy oysters at the Grand Central Oyster Bar. Oysters are said to be an aphrodisiac, so choose your dinner date wisely!

Bologna, Italy

In Italy, Bologna is known by locals as 'La Grassa' ('The Fat One'), as the food here is widely considered to be the best in the country. The city is most famous for its bolognese sauce and bologna sausage, but you will also find parmesan cheese and Parma ham here. There is an amazing range of dining options on offer, from street markets and cosy trattorias to fine-dining establishments − something for all tastes and budgets. Wherever you are heading in the world, you are sure to find an array of tempting local cuisine. Don't be tempted to stick to dishes you know and love on a European menu; instead, try something that is local to the area and made with regional produce - you will be very glad you did.
