Street Food: The Best Cities To Sample Local Specialities

Tostadas

If you are the kind of person who travels to eat, you already know that street food is one of the best ways to sample local specialities. We have hunted down some of the best street food from around the world and we’ll even tell you where to find it. We're good like that!

Bangkok

Street food in Bangkok is amongst the very best you will find anywhere. Satay is the number one snack − grilled skewers of meat served with a zesty peanut sauce. Head for Jay Eng on Charoen Krung Road for the best satay in the city.

Curry rice (khao gang) is a staple street food enjoyed for breakfast or lunch and comprises a selection of stir fries and curries served on rice.

We recommend Khao Gaeng Rattana at Nang Loeng Market, where you can try dishes such as sour shrimp curry or green chicken curry.

Poland

If there is one thing you must try on your trip to Poland, it's pierogi. The ultimate Polish street food, pierogi are dumplings made from flour, eggs, water and salt, usually filled with meat, cheese or potatoes, which are boiled and then fried.

Krakow is the city to visit for the best pierogi and we would head for Zapiecek on Slawkowska, just off the main square, which serves pierogi 24 hours a day!

Alternatively, you could always visit the city in August for the annual Pierogi Festival.

Vietnam

Banh mi is a Vietnamese-style baguette loaded with pickled daikon and carrot, coriander and meat. In Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), you will find some of the most authentic banh mi around.

Banh Mi Huynh Hoa at 26 Le Thi Rieng, Ben Thanh is so popular it practically has a cult following and can get extremely busy. Queuing is unheard of here, so be prepared to jostle to the front and fight for your sandwich - it will be well worth it!

Mexico

Tostadas − fried, crisp corn tortillas − are one of the most popular street foods in Mexico City. You can enjoy tostadas with a wide range of different toppings, ranging from traditional refried beans, salsa and guacamole to shrimp ceviche.

The city is packed with vendors selling authentic, high-quality street food and the best has to be Tostadas de Coyoacan at Coyoacan Market, where you may once have rubbed shoulders with Frida Kahlo. The restaurant offers the largest range of toppings around, including chicken in a spicy salsa, shrimp with tomato and chilli, chocolaty pork mole, and even octopus.

Now you have worked up an appetite, where will you be travelling − and what will you be eating − on your adventures this year?
