Staying safe while enjoying winter sports holidays

With an increasing number of Brits enjoying more active holidays, skiing and other winter sports are no longer the playground for only the rich and famous. Armed with a good winter sports travel insurance policy covering all planned activities, a winter break could be just the tonic the doctor ordered.

However, staying safe while on foreign soil, or more accurately snow, is important and providing a few simple precautions are followed, the risk of claiming on an annual multi trip travel insurance policy should be limited.

For those choosing to drive their own car, a few simple checks should be performed before setting off. As well as the usual water and oil checks, it is very important that tyres have plenty of life left in the tread. Many of the roads weaving their way around mountainous areas can be treacherous in icy weather and with a more changeable climate, a steady pair of wheels on the road is essential. If it is possible within the confines of the budget, specialist winter tyres can be obtained, which are specifically designed to better cope with harsher road conditions. Breakdown cover, if not already included, can be added to many annual multi trip travel insurance policies, for real peace of mind.

In the car, ensure that there are good provisions including warm blankets, food and drink. Being stranded in a cold climate can lead to severe consequences if not fully prepared. Some countries by law require the driver to also carry a warning triangle and luminous jacket.

On the slopes, have respect for the terrain. Engaging in any kind of sporting activity while under the influence of drink and drugs is not only extremely dangerous but will not be covered under the terms of the winter sports travel insurance policy. The majority of avalanches occur during a snowstorm so with changeable weather conditions, especially at altitude, monitoring the snow conditions could be a life saver.
