The start of a new year is a great time to make some travel resolutions, such as finally visiting the places you want to see or booking a few short trips throughout the year. It can be tough planning and saving for your travels, so how do you achieve your New Year's travel resolutions?

#1. Commit to a date and time

Think about when you want to travel. Whenever you decide on, make sure you book the time off work now. Choosing a date and time and organising time off makes it easier to motivate yourself to start planning.

#2. Be specific

Don't just choose a city − be specific and narrow it down to a city you really, really want to see this year. Sit down and brainstorm in a quiet corner. We bet you will have more than one city on your list, so pick your favourite!

#3. Work out your agenda

Travelling alone can be a bit daunting, but it is so rewarding. You get to do exactly what you want to do, so ask yourself what this is.

Perhaps wandering around art galleries and museums is your idea of the perfect break, or perhaps you prefer the idea of lazing on the beach, diving and swimming with dolphins.

Perhaps shopping for designer fashion and eating at the best restaurants sounds like a great holiday to you. Only include activities you really want to do on your itinerary.

#4. Do your research

Once you have figured out the what, where, when and why, next comes 'how'. You will need to do some research, so ask yourself how much your trip will cost, whether it is safe to travel alone (especially if you are a woman), and what you will need to take with you.

We are lucky enough to have a wealth of information at our fingertips thanks to the internet, so get online and find out more about travelling to your dream destination. Don't stop there − buy a guidebook and chat to friends and family for advice and recommendations.

It is also a good idea to tell friends and family where you are planning to go, when and why. Sharing your travel plans holds you accountable, making it more likely you will stay motivated and actually go.

#5. Save, save, save

Now comes the hard part. Once you know the price of flights, accommodation and food, it is time to start saving. You can buy a piggy bank or open a savings account − whichever works best for you.

You will probably need to cut back on luxuries for a while, such as nights out at the weekend, or take on some extra work to save for your dream holiday. Remember that where there's a will, there's a way. You can achieve any travel resolution you make this year − where will you go?
