Secret Places to Visit
Here are some of the world's most secret places and destinations, the hidden gems that are simply waiting to be discovered. So grab your walking shoes, don't forget to pack the mosquito repellent and organise your travel insurance, as these places are so far off the beaten track you can't afford to be without protection.
Leptis Magna, Libya
You'd be forgiven for thinking that the best Roman ruins in the world can be found in Rome - in fact, it's just not true! Libya, perhaps surprisingly, has amazing Roman ruins and by getting away from the crowds and heading to Leptis Magna near Tripoli, you'll have the chance to see ruins that very few other people have visited.
Tuamotu Islands, French Polynesia
If you're looking for a deserted beach, local fishing boats bobbing on the horizon and drinks in your beach hut as the sun sets, then the Tuamotu Islands should float your boat! An hour's flight from Papeete, these islands are practically empty, unpolluted and a haven of natural beauty. Snorkel with some of the most colourful and beautiful aquatic life or laze on the white sandy beaches whilst enjoying a cocktail - it's like your very own island paradise.
Sri Lanka
Whilst it's gaining popularity as a tourist hotspot, there are still parts of Sri Lanka which remain largely undiscovered and peaceful. Head to the southern coast near Galle for the perfect romantic escape for two. Everything you could need for an undisturbed break is here, from elephant sanctuaries to deserted beaches, boutique hotels and beautiful temples; not to mention the mouth-wateringly spicy local cuisine!
Pantanal Wetlands, South Brazil
If the Amazon seems a bit busy for your liking, why not try out some rainforest exploration with a difference this summer? The Pantanal Wetlands of south Brazil are home to some of the most amazing wildlife on the planet and the expanses of grassland make wildlife photography a breeze. Here you can see all kinds of animals in their natural habitat, including jaguars!
Suzhou, China
A kind of oriental Venice, Suzhou is one of China's hidden gems, with its quaint canals, traditional architecture and classical gardens. Enjoy a boat ride through the narrow waterways or enjoy strolling along Shan Tang Street - which dates back to around 800AD - where you can enjoy some traditional Chinese tea whilst watching life go by in this quaint corner of China.
No matter which destination you choose this year, always ensure you have travel insurance to cover you - it's even more vital in these remote areas!
