New York - most popular choice

New York is frequently the most popular choice for fans of city breaks but the capital city, Washington DC, is one of the top hot-spots for tourists visiting the US.

Sitting on the banks of the Potomac River, attractions in Washington include The Whitehouse, The Supreme Court as well as the John F Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts.

History buffs will find a whole host of memorials to past presidents as well as to the Vietnam and Korean wars.

For holidaymakers keen to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and escape the beaten path, a swamp tour may be just the thing.

Whilst it may sound less than inviting, in Louisiana, boating firms offering guided tours of the remaining wetlands do a roaring trade, offering visitors the chance to see local wildlife, including the much feared alligators.

If this sounds a little closer to nature than you would like, Hawaii offers visitors a whole range of different activities, whilst surrounded its beautiful landscapes.

For those wanting to kick back and relax, Hanauma Bay Nature Reserve in Honolulu is frequently listed as one of the must-visit locations.

The bay is surrounded on three sides and boasts sparkling clear waters, a small pocket of paradise for holidaymakers.

There is an abundance of friendly wildlife such as sea turtles, tropical fish and vivid coral reefs making it an ideal place for a spot of snorkelling.

However, before you dive in, it's important to make sure you have sufficient travel cover. It's not difficult to obtain cheap travel insurance as the USA is not considered as a high risk destination.

Activities such as snorkelling will usually be included as standard on your policy but it's worth checking before you leave.

Finally, for those who can't decide what they want to do, it might be worth considering a fly drive holiday, moving around the US to get a taste of everything.

Lazing on a beach one day and taking in a show on Broadway the next…what could be better?
