Lovely Lisbon ‒ Five of the best cafes and restaurants for dining out
Portugal's capital city is a culinary delight, renowned for its delicate custard tarts and fresh seafood. With so many cafes, tapas bars and restaurants to choose from, where are the best places to eat out in Lisbon? We have hunted high and low and uncovered five of the best options, whether you are in the mood for tapas, casual dining, seafood or a romantic meal for two.
#1. Cantinho do Avillez, Chiado
Owned by one of Portugal's most famous chefs, Jose Avillez (who also owns the Mini Bar and Michelin-starred Belcanto), this bistro offers surprisingly good value for money, fresh seasonal produce and a menu of international cuisine. Enjoy the industrial chic decor as you dine on steak tartar, lamb tagine or fresh seafood.
#2. Tagide Wine and Tapas Bar, Chiado
If you are staying in upmarket Chiado ‒ or even if you are not ‒ check out this tapas bar offering set lunch menus from €8.50 (just over £6) or order the small plates of tapas including specialities such as clams in white wine and garlic. Don't miss out on the opportunity to try the custard tarts served with delicious cinnamon ice cream.
#3. The Nuns Canteen
Tucked away on Travessa do Ferragial is one of Lisbon's best-kept secrets. This is a popular choice with local office workers and students, and you will find it only by the discreet sign on the front door. Run by the Catholic Association, you can enjoy a bargain lunch ‒ two courses for €6.50 ‒ served in a canteen-style atmosphere. Another great reason to come here is the stunning views from the roof terrace over the rooftops of Lisbon.
#4. Cervejaria Ramiro, Intendente
Ramiro, known as 'the seafood temple', is a much-loved Lisbon institution, popular with locals and tourists alike. If you want to gorge on the city's stunning seafood, this is the place to be. Crab, oysters, lobster, shellfish, shrimp and tiger prawns ‒ you will find everything here. We recommend heading here early to avoid the queues, although you will be served drinks if you have to stand in line.
#5. SeaMe, Chiado
For a more contemporary take on the traditional seafood restaurant, SeaMe offers an Asian-style menu where you will find sashimi and sushi alongside seared tuna (served with wasabi ice cream) and Azores parrot fish. The bustling atmosphere and efficient waiting staff make this a great choice for couples, families and groups of friends.
