Enjoy The Snow − No Skis Required

Fatbiking in the snow

Winter breaks don't have to involve taking to the piste for a skiing holiday − there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the snow. We've rounded up a few of the best ways to make the most of the winter weather this year.

Fatbiking

In case you haven't heard, fatbiking is one of the latest trends − but what is it? You will freewheel down snowy trails on a mountain bike fitted with oversized tyres. If this sounds pretty exciting, that's because it is. Head for Sweden, where the craze is really taking off.

Ice trekking

Glacier trekking is not for the faint-hearted and is a pretty cool (excuse the pun) way to enjoy the snow this winter. Head off on a survival expedition to Iceland with Epic Tomato (epictomato.com) and you will trek across the Langjokull glacier, crossing underground caves with ropes and harnesses and learning to dig snow holes. You can even add some ice fishing and snow kiting to your adventure if you like.

Snowshoeing

If the idea of tramping across snow-covered mountains and through gorges appeals, then a snow-shoeing adventure could be the perfect choice for your winter break this year. Exodus.co.uk offers an eight-day adventure to Transylvania with departures from January 2016.

Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Head for Siberia this winter with Secret Compass.com and you can be a part of the annual reindeer migration across the Gulf of Ob. We can't guarantee that you will spot Rudolph, but it will certainly be an experience you will never forget.

Hot springs

You don't need to be freezing your socks off to enjoy the snow − how about a holiday to Colorado and a trip to Glenwood Hot Springs? Here you will find 'the world's largest spring pools', which are always warm and the perfect way to ease aching winter muscles. You could always combine a trip to the springs with a skiing or snowboarding holiday.

Photography hikes

Winter is a great time of year for photographer to get their kicks − and their best shots − and where better to head than Norway for the northern lights? A photography hike can take in whatever you like and the opportunity to take a ride on a husky-drawn sleigh could provide some great photo opportunities. Just don't forget a spare camera battery. Whatever you get up to this winter, make sure you wrap up warm − it's cold out there.
