What do you need to know if a trip to China is on the cards? We have the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions if you are heading for China this year.

When is the best time to visit?

The Chinese climate differs across the various regions of the country, with most areas experiencing dry seasons and monsoons. Decisions about the best time to visit should take into account not only which regions you will be staying in but also the type of climate you prefer.

As a general guide, early autumn − September to early October − is the most pleasant season, with temperatures of 50-72°F and limited rain. Spring sees similar conditions, but summers can be unbearably hot and winters bitterly cold, especially if you are visiting the north of the country.

What is the currency?

The currency in China is the renminbi or Chinese yuan (CNY). Bear in mind that the currency in Hong Kong is different - the Hong Kong dollar (HKD) is used here.

Will my electrical devices work in China?

Those travelling to China from the UK or Europe should find that their 220v devices work across much of the country. For travellers from the US or anywhere using a lower voltage, a transformer will be needed. It is also a good idea for all travellers to pack a portable plug adaptor, just in case, although you can buy these fairly cheaply once you are in the country.

Are there any laws or customs I should be aware of? It is important to remember that foreign visitors are treated no differently to Chinese citizens. When you are visiting China, you must abide by the Law of the People's Republic of China. As long as you have a valid visa, you can visit any areas open to visitors, but make sure you respect the customs and traditions of local areas.

Is it safe to drink the tap water?

It is considered unsafe to drink tap water in China without boiling it first. In most hotels you will be provided with a water dispenser, water heater or thermos in your room, which can be refilled upon request. It is very easy to find bottled water everywhere and most restaurants will serve free tap water, which has already been boiled, or bottled water for a charge.

Don't forget to pack your sun protection whatever time of year you are visiting, and some comfortable shoes. There is a lot to see in China and you don't want to miss out.
