Banish the January blues with a European break

Got the January blues? How about a short break to Europe to brighten your mood? With cheap international flights, coaches or Eurostar available to many European destinations, there's far more to the continent than the usual destinations of Paris and Rome. Check out some of these hot spots for a long weekend or longer break to banish those January blues.

Split, Croatia

The beautiful city of Split is Croatia's second largest city, and the largest city on the Adriatic Coast. There's plenty of history to uncover here - don't miss out on Diocletian's Palace, one of the most impressive Roman ruins in the world, and the beautiful Cathedral of St Domnius. Other must-see attractions include pebbly Bacvice Beach with its beachfront cafes or the opportunity to take a sailing adventure from Split to Dubrovnik, taking in some of the most stunning coastline. Don't forget to organise your gadget travel insurance before setting off - you'll want your camera with you for this trip!

Bordeaux

For the class and culture of France without setting a foot in Paris, Bordeaux is the perfect place to be. Ideal for a romantic weekend retreat for two, it's home to beautiful architecture and some of the best designer boutiques on Rue Saint Catherine, not to mention the delights of local food and wine. Bliss.

Bonn

Bonn in Germany may be slightly off the usual tourist trail, but it's a real treasure trove waiting to be discovered, with plenty of history, stunning architecture and fantastic views over the Rhine River. It's also renowned for its local beer - we recommend cheap gadget travel insurance with insurefor, in case you end up spilling your drink on your smartphone.

Edinburg&

Edinburgh in Scotland might not be the most exotic destination you can imagine, but it's definitely one of the most cultural cities around. Why not visit during July and August to see the Edinburgh Festival in full swing, when the historic Royal Mile is packed with street performers. Don't miss a visit to Edinburgh Castle, a wander through the Grassmarket or a ghost walk to the underground Mary King's Close.

There are plenty more unusual destinations out there to visit, from the Czech Republic and Croatia to off-the-beaten track cities in France, Germany and Spain. So shake off those January blues with a trip somewhere a little bit different this year.
