Cheap international travel insurance and sensible savings on a budget getaway

If you are growing weary with the total non-appearance of the British summer this year, you might be tempted to scrape together your pennies to enjoy a bit of warmer weather overseas. And it is possible to get a cracking holiday at rock bottom prices if you aren't too fussy about where you go and are willing to shop around. Popping down to the travel agent and pointing to a page in a glossy brochure is one of the simplest ways to book a holiday. However, this can also be one of the most expensive. If you are hoping to find a holiday which isn't too expensive and doesn't involve a cockroach infested hotel, you might have to spend a bit of time scouring the internet for the best deals.

Whether you leave it to the last minute or book well in advance, there are some great deals to be found, but before you confirm your booking, double check to see what's included as in many cases hidden extras can make it more expensive than it initially seems.

If you are opting for either full or half board, it might be worth comparing the price of an accommodation only deal. This will give you an idea of how much extra you are being charged for your food. If it seems like a lot and you are staying in a busy town or a resort, scrap the meals and find your own. Not only will this save money but it will also give you the freedom to eat what and when you want.

If on the other hand you are staying in a remote location, you may well be better off opting for a food plus accommodation deal to prevent the hassle of having to try and find somewhere to eat.

And even if you are desperate to keep the price of your getaway as low as possible, don't be tempted to skimp on insurance. Regardless of where you are thinking of travelling to, it is possible to get cheap international travel insurance – perhaps for just pennies per day. Saving a few pounds in the short term but risking having to pay out hundreds or even thousands if anything happens is not a gamble worth taking.
