European Destinations

Plovdiv, Bulgaria, architecture, town photo

So you've climbed the Eiffel Tower in Paris, visited the Colosseum in Rome and taken a boat cruise around the Greek Islands - what's left to see in Europe? There are plenty of European destinations that are ideal for travellers who have seen it all - here are our top picks.

Serbia

Ridiculously inexpensive, Serbia is quickly becoming one of Europe's hotspots and it won't be a secret for long. Belgrade has plenty of stunning architecture and cultural attractions to rank it alongside Berlin and Rome, and there are some great ski resorts nearby as well as luxury spas, for a relaxing break. The Exit Festival, held every July, was recently awarded the title of Best European Festival, so what better time to head to Belgrade and check it out? Temperatures in the summer months average a comfortable 23 degrees centigrade, with plenty of sunshine.

Plovdiv, Bulgaria

With one of the most beautiful Old Towns in Europe, lively nightlife and plenty of history, Plovdiv is becoming a popular tourist hotspot, but prices are still very reasonable.

The architecture here is stunning, from the restored Roman amphitheatre to heritage buildings which have been converted into nightclubs, restaurants and hotels, but that's not the only reason to stop off in Plovdiv this summer.

Affordable shopping, quirky craft markets and fascinating museums can all be found here, and there's plenty on offer to attract couples and families. Cameras at the ready for the chocolate box colourful timbered houses of the Old Town or the views from the Rhodope Mountains, just outside the city.

Plovdiv is also renowned for its street art, so look out for the Ethnographic Museum's Balkan murals and imaginative street art around every corner.

Vienna

Vienna has always been a popular city, but this year marks the 150th anniversary of the 'Ringstrasse', with a line up of exhibitions and special events taking place. Head for the Sigmund Freud museum for an intellectual afternoon out, people watch outside one of the coffee houses or hunt for indie and vintage fashions in the backstreets of the 7th district, where you'll also find stunning handmade jewellery.

For cocktails, Puff (once a brothel), on Gumpendorferstrasse is the place to see and be seen. Organise your cheap single trip travel insurance before you set off on your travels and you'll be protected no matter what happens on your summer holiday.

You don't have to stick to the tried-and-tested sights of Europe this summer - there are plenty of destinations and sights for travellers who think they have seen it all. Be a little adventurous and see them for yourself.
