Top 5 European festivals

If you're considering heading to a festival in Europe this year, here are 5 of the best that you may not have considered:

Rock Werchter Festival, Belgium

One of the biggest music festivals in Europe, this popular festival draws an international crowd every July for its line-up of some of the very best modern rock and alternative bands. The 2013 line-up includes 30 Seconds to Mars, Green Day and German heavy rock band Rammstein. With on-site camping available for the duration, a ticket for all four days will set you back around 200 Euros and there are cheap hostels available in the area if you don't fancy camping.

Rock en Seine, Paris

Where better to rock out this summer than on the banks of the River Seine, in charming Paris? Every August, this too-cool-for-school festival attracts chic, hip and happening rock fans from across the globe and prides itself on being environmentally friendly. Headlining this year are System of a Down, with other acts to be announced over the summer. At around 109 Euros for a 3 day ticket, it's a fairly budget friendly option too and of course you're in the heart of Paris, filled with hotels, restaurants and attractions.

Pinkpop Festival, The Netherlands

Usually held on the weekend of Pentecost (in June), this festival at Landgraaf is the longest running music festival in Europe. With day tickets from 85 Euros and a weekend ticket setting you back close to 170 Euros, it's not the cheapest option! Camping is available and hotels in nearby Maastricht fill up quickly in June, so make sure you book in advance. Always ensure that you have appropriate travel insurance in place for any festival, particularly if you're camping, as if your possessions are lost or stolen you could be left out of pocket! Headline acts this year include Green Day, Queens of the Stone Age and Kings of Leon.

Lowlands Festival, The Netherlands

Lowlands in Biddinghuizen runs in August and is an eclectic mix of all types of music from rock and pop to dance and metal. With stand up comedy and cinema running alongside the bands, this is a festival you won't want to miss! Acts for this year are yet to be announced but will include Bullet for my Valentine and The Lumineers. Sadly, 2013 tickets went on sale in February and are already sold out, but get the dates in your diary for 2014!

Rock Am Ring/Rock Am Park, Germany

For a massive rock and metal line-up, head for one of these two festivals, held in early June. With more than 85 bands performing, headline acts include Papa Roach, Stone Sour, Limp Bizkit and many more. Tickets for this year are already sold out, so make sure you plan in advance for the 2014 festival.

With so many festivals taking place across Europe, it's easy to find one that suits your music tastes, with great headline acts and camping facilities.
